Cats should come running to the sound of a can opener. Dogs should come running to the sound of the nail grinder. Once conditioned, wait for him to start offering up behaviors and reinforce what you want to see again. Feed early and often. Helps to start them early, but it’s never too late.

My dog comes running when she hears water running in the bathtub or laundry sink . . . she adores baths and has been washed in both. She'll also come running if I'm doing anything with bath towels ;-) or her toys or the leash or anything else that has anything to do with her. Or if I call the cat.

My cat doesn't know what a can opener is (pull-top cans). However, he comes when he's called extremely reliably (except if he's scared).

My cats have always magically appeared at the rattle of a box of cat biscuits. ;-)
