The DDR dogs of years ago have something similar to those of now in character?

to be fair, one can assume many things from a pic. it's a national pastime in U.S. dog circles and many experts evaluating dogs from 1 or 2 pics.

in the end, the only thing one can really determine from a pic is if the dog is photogenic or not. and that is still only an opinion.

and those were some very nice looking dogs. well, in my opinion anyway.

Are we seriously saying we should be looking at Dobes for linebreeding now?

I mean, if we want Shepherds start dropping dead, sure, let's do that...

BE, I had to google that on dobes. it's been many years since I had one and did not realize this was an issue. it is a genetic issue and just another sad example of what breeding expressly for show can do to a breed.

BE - take a statement out of context much? Sheesh.... it was merely an example of how linebreeding is used in different breeds, as compared to how it is/or not used in the GSD. Many GSD breeders don't like to use linebreeding at all, and IMO that is because they may not understand genetics and how combining characteristics are used to improve and set type, whether is phenotype or genotype.

Valk, i talk to people who worked in those programs on regulair bases, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, there were a lot of crappy dogs and dropouts in the border kennels, one of my friends was taking care of hundreds of dogs over time, including lots of dogs from the wolf/GSD program, up to 60 at a time, he says most of those dogs will not pass any test done today for LE, so we must be realistic as well, from a pic, you can tell nothing but looks, they might just been walking the border as a deterrent

@Koots: you might want to use a different breed then, because Dobies are not it. That's the last breed I am looking "for advise". :)

Geez BE - I give up on talking to you, as it seems you have a real bias towards me and a lack of comprehension. Goodbye, and good luck with your dog.

I am not sure why you think I am biased towards you. I would have said the same thing to anyone else. I just feel that Doberman are not a good example. As for lack of comprehension, English is not my first language. I do think my comprehension isn't all that bad though. :)
