I am looking for a male German Shepherd, age 1 1/2 to 3 yrs old,and on the large size, for a friend who recently lost her service dog. The dog must be good with dogs, kids and cats, as well as having an impeccable temperament.  My friends service dog recently passed away at 15 yrs of age. He was a rescue dog, originally. Needless to say, he will be a house dog, by her side, 24/7. She doesnt want a sable or a white. If anyone knows of a dog that would fit this criteria,  or finds a dog on a shelter or on craiglist and could evaluate, if it is not in the southeast, please post here. Thanks!

Sorry I have disappeared- still having trouble coping with the loss of Missie T and every time I see a dog with he r eyes and soul straring back at me from behind bars in a shelter, at risk for euthanasia,  I melt down :( Casey James was recently altered and it turned into a nightmare. Poor boy has had so many surgeries, for his neck, his elbows, and this was supposed to be  a non life threatening procedure. The vet didnt tie off a blood vessel properly and his scrotum swelled to the size of 2 grapefruits. He had such a bad hematoma, blood was oozing through his skin in his groin :( He had to have a second surgery, the following day, to completely remove the scrotum. He looks like he was run over by  a mack truck..  He is healing now, but it was bad- very very bad :(

Does "your friend" plan on having the dog certified?

What type of service will the dog be expected to provide?

I would recommend that "your friend" be more active in looking for this dog. If I thought I might have a candidate available, I would not be doing the placement through any third party. I would need to deal with the handler directly - otherwise it seems to sound like someone poking around for a pet dog for themselves. Your efforts may very well be legitimate and it a nice way of helping a friend - but perhaps you see the issue.

Good luck in your search.

Good post Kinolog. I don't want to sound insensitive, but I am quite surprised about the search process here as well.  Do you mean that if someone found a sable dog with all of the traits you mentioned, it would not be considered by your friend?  I get not wanting a white GSD (but that's a whole other can of worms and I don't want to derail this thread) but not a sable? Really? I am so sorry about the loss of your dog and your friend's, but something doesn't seem quite right here.  If this person needs a true service dog, and had relied on one in the past for that long, I hope the criteria requirement set forth would be more specific and structured rather than a second party coming on a web board and listing out a relatively vague set of traits. What exactly is the disability or condition of your friend. What agency has the handler or dog certified through?

I hate for anyone to think i'm cold, but the service dog thing seems to be the newest way to get good dogs for a better price!
I've had several of these requests in the past week. All looking for a service dog prospect for a friend, and wanting them for nothing.
I always suggest that they can meet the dog and then say that I will donate the dog to them thru a service dog organization. They never call back.

Really Sitasmom;  i JUST LAYED OUT $6,000.00 for my puppy and probably h ave another $20,000 to go before he is trained...certified and any possible help to me at all.  I t  is a long process and a lot of money to train a service dog;  does not matter what the persons disability is or for what service the dog is trained.  You are talking a VERY high level of training for these dogs and a long time before they can work in the public whether it be LE, medical, SAR.  etc.  Nan

I didn't say that everyone is a scam, but that it is happening. Just today I received 2 requests - one with MS the other with PTSD.
I offered to contact any organization that they wish to work with, one hung up on me, the other said I was crazy to even suggest to work within an organization.

I use my gsd as service dog. I never asked anyone for free or discount to do so. Please dont judge us all by a few. I have always bought my dogs full price. Some very unscrupulous individuals do make it look bad for the rest of us by begging for discount or free and then even abusing the gifts not being used for what they were given for.
