Depending on the chip number, the manufacturer might be able to help. Mfr might know who the number was sold to (distributor, vet clinic, shelter, etc.). If so, that clinic/shelter should know which animal it was put in. If the chip went to a distributor, it gets more difficult because they probably do not keep track of sn :-( A vet, shelter, or animal control may be able to help determine the manufacturer. The microchip could be registered through AKC, too, if the previous owner registered the dogs in the U.S. or if the chip is a re-chip.  I had a dog that the microchip migrated and we had to get her re chipped (very wiggly Siberian Husky). Same with a cat...

Another complicating factor, GSCat, is that different countries have different registers and systems for chips; if they came from one where its quite normal for the purchaser, rather than the original breeder, to put the paperwork in, either through their Vet or directly,
a lot are done in pet call-names only ...
