So are they using/going to start using bloodhounds? 300 million smell receptors compared to 225 million for gsd. And, they have floppy ears! Of course if they start baying/howling the echo in some airports might make it scary/eerie and frighten. And someone might think the brindles are pit bulls/pit bull mixes...

But bloodhounds are really cute as puppies ;-) especially the red ones ;-)

dont know if bloodhounds are used at typical detectionwork, I know they are used for human trail work, dont know if any used for indoor work,

Well there is a lot on the 'net, and elsewhere, about Bloodhounds (and other Hound breeds, and Spaniels) and the way dropped ears 'sweep' rising scent down to the dogs' noses - been quite a bit of research. But obviously its much more important to keep prick-eared dogs in the jobs they have already been doing which has identifiably held back even more 'thousands' of bombers in the past ...  /s

"Mother Theresa in the summer" - LOL

hmmm, interesting , dropped ears sweep rising scent down, so that would mean they only work with hidden stuff  maximum up to one feet from the floor, LOL, these kind of reasonings are just stupid

so that would make their ears function as an umbrella for dropping scent, and they would not smell that , LOLOL hilarious

Why don't you read some of these findings before shouting ? All floor laid scent RISES; the ears catch and sweep it back to the dog's nose - which is one reason why bloodhounds are so excellent at trailing. If someone had a stash hidden in a cupboard or car or ... well, anywhere  over a foot above the floor, really, ... putting a spaniel in where it can climb all levels available within the room / vehicle soon turns up scent from any concealment, which is why their record is also quite good at finding stuff where the scent is 'cold', having been laid down for some time.

'Dropping scent' ??? What are you on ?

by duke1965 on 03 January 2019 - 10:01

o, I definately think that applies to tracks, but unfortunately, TSA is not into trackingdogs, TSA is NOT into floor laid scent, so maybe that doesnot applie in this topic
