The boy had to be put to rest Wednesday. Because the vet says elbow surgery would run around 2000.00 per elbow and about 6 to 8 weeks recovery and then the other elbow. and he said only about 40% success rate and even after we would have to keep him calm. A shot a month run around 200.00 for pain or pills which could leave to kidney and liver damage. I live in northern Maine lots of snow so I would snow blow paths for him in our yard. Most of the times he would stay in the path and other times we would romp and jump and dig in the snow. And we have been keeping my boy calm even in the house. He would lay down for about 15 minutes or more and when he got up whimpered and whine. We tried to clip his nails and he would let us touch his front legs he would let out a cry. So I figured make an appt. with vet and they can sedate him with something stronger so they can clip them. Well when we got there the vet told he has really progress. And there isn't anything else they could do for the boy and of course I said he is only 14 months old But the boy was really hurting even after we have kept him calm for the past 4 months which was very hard because high drive and he loved his ball. As much as it killed me I agreed to have him put to rest. That was the hardest thing I had to do in my live was to sit there with him to he went to sleep. We really had a good bond and yes at 58 years old I did cry. So I wrote to the breeder to let them know what I just went to. And I get an email back Saying they wish they knew that I was going to put him to rest. Sorry for your loss and I should've let then know so they could take him back or find someone that can financially handle his needs. Which is bullshit because I emailed them 3 or 4 days ago and told them how bad he was and I was going to take him to the vets and wasn't sure what was going to happen. And as usual they never got back to me.
And when I wrote the first email to them it wasn't to put him to rest it was to see what else we can do to help him out. And I did talk to the vet to see if they knew someone that would like to have him and afford to keep him. and he said best thing is to put him to rest. And believe me the vet had a hard time to tell me. He knew the bond Loki and I had and since all this had happened he started chasing his tail and each day it was getting worst. I knew his mind had to be work and he had to burn energy but he couldn't .

Wow he's beautiful, I'm so sorry for your loss, very sad.
Thanks for letting us know who the breeder is, another gsd breeder in usa to avoid. Is the kennel called Gator Land?

OOOOHHH I am so sorry. RIP sweet boy. Just tragic.

Oooofff, what a kick to the gut, zigzag! I'm so, so sorry, for both you and your boy...you two should have had years ahead of you together.

We all know that certification of hips and elbows in breeding animals doesn't guarantee us the offspring will be clear, but it's still a bitter pill to swallow when it happens.

Heartbreaking when you have to make that kind of decision but sounds like it was the right one. Shame on the breeder for saying that after the fact.

So sorry to hear this news; RIP Loki, run free. x

I think the breeder mishandled their end, badly. Hope they will learn from this. But the upshot would still probably have been the same; we don't want to part with dogs we've come to love, and we don't want to see them continue on in dreadful pain, unable to live normal, unfulfilled lives, so we have to 'do the right thing'. Because we can; try to see it as a privilege that you could do this for him, zigzag.

I love how people will have a place on their facebook page about their experience if it's good. But if you have a bad one you ended up getting deleted so you can't leave a comment.
Thanks everyone for your kind words.
