I've heard both, here, Mr D !

could it led to extinction of GSDs? no.
then who cares?
really i would be glad to see significant decline popularity of breed among general public.
may be after that the GSDs can return to what supposed to be normal for breed.

Can't argue against that.

by joanro on 26 December 2018 - 21:12

Valk, so you think the gsd will be better off being replaced as a working breed by bird dogs? They are being rejected because they have prick ears, not because they are not excellent on the job.

by ValK on 27 December 2018 - 02:12

Joan, i'm really don't care who and what somewhere decided.
overall it won't impact breed per se.
as for GSDs "excellent on the job", well, frankly i doubt even 5% from
total present breeding will do "good" at that, leave alone "excel".

by joanro on 27 December 2018 - 02:12

Valk, you don't make sense. The breed is supposed to be a working breed. The ones working for tsa do excellent job, but the public doesn't like " pointy ears" . So bird dogs are being used instead. Now that's one less job the gsd is going to have.

So much for returning to its original purpose. Pointy ears are now it's downfall.

by duke1965 on 27 December 2018 - 07:12

its not one job less, only TSA which is a fraction of worldwide demand in detection dogs, in which the GSD is BY FAR the best breed for the job
TSA probably has a democrat in charge, as they care more about peoples feelings, than about getting the job done properly

As Duke says, this is only about TSA's requirements, and their particular difficulties, apparently, with obtaining enough dogs. It's not some universal plot. But GSDs are well on their way to being replaced in a lot of roles anyway, pointy ears or no ears, because of a variety of reasons including the fears of the travelling public, not wanting to discomfort them (or at least the innocent majority) UNNECESSARILY, for the atmosphere at termini; & the handlers' preferences for 'easier', 'cuddlier' dogs; as well as whether these other breeds will work longer & more enthusiastically, or have greater talent for actually finding stashes of stuff (as opposed to tracking and trailing, which IMO GSDs DO do best). So ValK does have a point in general terms, rather than this specific TSA decision. Even where the GSDs are NOT going downhill in the way s/he describes.
