I agree with Gertrude, by far the best advice given; along with Sunsilver's first post. PLUS the suggestion from Koots and Mindhunt of maybe trying boots to keep the dog's feet off very cold ground. But something no-one said: not just feed at regular mealtimes but NO 'ad-lib' grazing, or between meals treats, while this is an issue. Owner can treat as part of the reward WHEN the dog has performed outside on command. She needs to pick up the food bowl at all other times. And yes I suppose if all else fails she could resort to the Q-tip / matchstick trick - though a massage of the anus with a warm damp cloth would be as good, and less potentially likely to cause injury.

Thanks, Rik, Gertrude, Mindhunt, and Hundmutter. I'll pass the suggestions on.

ND is having a serious cold snap right now... SIL has been feeding her dog on a schedule since he was a little guy, and he was well behaved/house-broken before the move and after arrival in ND until it got cold.

Looks like he's overlaid a good habit with a bad one then, for some reason. Might be shock of very cold ground; might be something completely different and as yet unidentified ! If he's been there before, he can re-train back to it, as long as the owner puts in the necessary effort.

Thank you, all. SIL also says "thank you."
