Need Help-Desperate Situation for Members of Dog Training/Schutzhund Community

I am copying a post I just put on facebook regard a very dire situation for some of our fellow dog community members. Please read and I implore you to help in whatever way you can for Peter and Petra, their situation is becoming very critical. Thank you, Rosetta L. Barke (rosettabarke @sbcglobal.net) you can email me for my contact information if you are able to help them financially or otherwise
Facebook friends and fellow dog training community members, I need your help, two members of our community are in very dire circumstances and face a terrible outcome without assistance....
Peter Dummer and Petra Raffel
were enroute to move to the Kentucky area when Petra was in a very serious and extremely near fatal rollover car accident with their newly acquired cargo van, full of their dogs, their belongings...and Petra. Petra was trapped for over 30 minutes, Peter unable to get her our, other bystanders unable to get her out. Ultimately the jaws of life were used to extract her. Petra's injuries, including a concussion, bruises, burns, punctures and lacerations, were non lifethreatening, but she was not even able to go to the hospital due to their desperate financical situation. The dog trailer she was towing also rolled over and the top came off (both the trailer and the cargo van were totalled) and two of the dogs that actually survived initial accident were killed by oncoming vehicles. One was a VA dog and part of their breeding future, the other an extremely promising young male that was a full sibling to my Bella v. Kellnerhof.
In additional to being devastated by this, they are trapped in a Kentucky hotel, no incoming resources, all their belonging and their dogs and funds that are rapidly going to be gone. They are in extremely dire circumstances as are their animals. The other vehicle they have is barely functional. They have NO backup.
I am asking ANYBODY who is willing to assist them in any way to help do so if possible. If you life in the area, perhaps you could help them find a place to stay with their animals or help them find a safe place to keep their dogs. I know times are EXTREMELY tough, but if any of you can spare any funds to help them, I will leave my email contact and give any of you that contact me my contact address and phone to send the funds to. I will ensure that they receive the funds they so desperately need. I am a registered nurse in Wisconsin and assure you this situation is complelely up front and that I am absolutely credible to make sure that they receive any and all donations that any of you might be able to help them with. If you can help them with placement for themselves or their dogs I will be happy to forward their contact information....Once again, I know times are tough and this is much to ask for all of us, but I think you can all appreciate the desperate nature of their situation. They have no place to live, resources that are almost completely gone, and their whole life in dogs with them in that hotel room in Kentucky. Please, help me to help them.....
My email is
email@example.com, if you write to me I will send you all of my contact information via email. My name is Rosetta Barke and most of you that are within my friend network are familiar with me and may even know Peter and Petra.
If at all possible, please help me to help my friends...And please consider sharing this on your facebook wall and passing it forward.

If this truly happened, then I'm really sorry, especially for the dogs. Terrible experience to go through.
But, I'm afraid I have to take this with a grain of salt, Peter and Petra don't exactly have a wonderful reputation. I've seen allegations against them that they've stolen items and swindled money from people.
Is there a way to prove that they are in the dire position that they claim to be?
If I am wrong then I apologize.

I know this is difficult on a forum venue, but I am really going ask that the negative commentary is kept to a minimum. I would be more than willing to discuss this on a private contact on my email ( will then forward phone number if you wish ). I can say this, I have seen the photos of the accident and the injuries, I know both of them well enough to comfortably say that for this posting to go public, is devastating to both of them from a self worth standpoint. Please keep that in mind in the postings. We are talking about a very desperate situation for two individuals that are are trying their best to succeed in the dog training and breeding business during a time when our economy is at the worst its been since the Great Depression. The last thing either one of them would "ever" wish to do is ask publicly for help. Honestly, without some help, this situation is dire for both of them and their animals. This situation is very real for them and for their dogs.

I'm sorry I find what Euroshepherd relevant to donating to people who may or may not have taken advantage of others when times were better. Your asking the dog community to donate their hard earned time/money for this cause.
Since when is it ok NOT to ask for proof OPENLY on the SAME forum you posted on?
by Chaz Reinhold on 22 July 2012 - 19:56
Wasn't she just on the All Breed forum looking for a place, and now 4-5 later she is there?
by Hundmutter on 22 July 2012 - 20:19
Find it hard to believe a Fire department would cut her out of a vehicle but then NOT insist she went to a hospital
for her concussion, burns & shock to be treated, & have other things like whiplash checked out. We are always told
there are ways around the finance situation for emergency / accident survivors without funds ...
by GSDSRULE on 22 July 2012 - 22:08
As far as my own personal experience goes, they cannot make you go to the hospital if you are able to refuse.
Other than that, I don't know any of these people and other than to say I think if you are publicly asking for money, you should be willing to publicly post proof of need.

Exactly where in Ky did this occur? And when

Didn't they have auto insurance? Usually that will cover injury ? Thought I read that the two dogs that survived the initial accident were killed by oncoming traffic? Would also like to see some verification, but if it is true it is a sad situation.
by workingdogz on 23 July 2012 - 17:20
I agree with joanro, were they covered by insurance?
All seems bizarre, just a few days ago, housing possibilities
were being sought on this board, now a near fatal car accident?
I suppose it could happen, but I cannot fathom someone being
that injured in a rollover accident not seeking medical attention.
Thats what hospitals are for, ER, no payment up front is needed
in the event they didn't have medical insurance.
Surely the insurance they had on their vehicles & trailer should
be able to cover their need for funds? Is there a link to an accident
reported in a paper somewhere etc?
by Bhaugh on 24 July 2012 - 00:54
Just so everyone knows, auto insurance does NOT cover medical expenses unless the policy holder carries a rider on the policy to cover such.
That being said, I stand by my response.

I am truly not sure when our society became quite this cynical and quite this cruel...I will reiterate, if there are individuals that truly may have information about resources available to these individuals in need, in the Kentucky area, my email was placed openly in the original post. There have been over 1700 hits to the post, 10 negative or neutrally negative posts/replies and I have yet to receive one email requesting additional information to confirm need and possibly provide resources. This is pretty sad. I am not going to post their photos/or their accident report on this site to enable voyeristic interest, but I do reiterate, if anyone knows of resources available in the area for them or ....their dogs....I would welcome an email to discuss their situation further. I guess the impressive thing here is that of the over 1700 hits, if any of those individuals had doubts, they at least had the personal integrity not to post them. Interestingly, the only attempted helpful replies I have had to this situation were from non-dog community individuals...Disappointing...

I hardly think that asking when and where this accident took place is an affront to your charitable aspirations...quite simply, it's the fiscally prudent thing to do before making a donation to a stranger on behalf of two additional strangers. Especially if you want info on resources available "in the area"--Kentucky may not be Texas, but it's still big enough that a general vicinity would be needed if someone were to try and identify individuals or organizations that could possibly be of help...
by Hundmutter on 25 July 2012 - 08:22
Hexe - good points.
by workingdogz on 25 July 2012 - 10:45
Hexe has put things in a very polite way.
You came here asking for help/funds for two people,
but provided nothing but scant details. You surely
cannot expect people to bust out their wallets and
such without some more info? The fact that more
details are wanted/needed doesn't make any of us
cruel and/or cynical. Kentucky is indeed a decent sized
State. We have some good friends in a few places in
Kentucky and Ohio etc, but without info as to where this
happened and some form of tangible proof it did indeed
happen? well...it just doesn't sit right.
It's not that hard to say, here is the hotel they are at--->
Here is where the accident occured--->
This is what they need--->
This is what they are waiting on (insurance payout etc).
All you did was made a blanket request for funds.

I am not sure I am being unclear here, I requested that if someone was in a position to refer them to any resources, that they contact me for additional information. The last thing I would do for anyone, in an attempt to help them, is post pictures or police report information online in a public forum. Many individuals just scan the individual topics, and should. I am not sure any of us, would want to have those items posted at large, but would not mind doing so if an individual, with real intent, made a contact. I have already posted more information, about the individuals I am trying to assist, and myself than they or I are probably comfortable with, but was doing so as to be vague about trying to help nameless people and being nameless myself would truly be viewed cyncially and should...Once again, not one email from this forum, not one...Not even, I know where there is cheap dog food in Kentucky, I am not sure that kinda information puts anyone out??

It would seem these people are poor planners to begin with. While the accident story may or may not be true, as a complete stranger I know, this: They left their old home with the intent to start over a new life, with eight dogs in their care. They clearly didn't have a clue where they were supposed to end their journey and lay their heads down on a place to be called their home. They left without a pot to piss in. And now they need to rely "On the kindness of strangers".

Disappointing? I'm sure it is. To many of us, however, it's quite telling--non-dog community people are a naíve population relative to the individuals on whose behalf you're appealing.
The folks here are, in general, a pretty generous bunch who have opened their wallets to various causes over the years that involved total strangers known only via these forums--but those strangers were much more forthcoming with details than you've been, and the excuse that you're 'respecting their privacy' is three-legged lame at best. Even if I know where to find 'cheap dog food in Kentucky', of what use would that be if the food is in Paducah and they're in Louisville? Again, IMO, asking for the general vicinity is only 'revealing' if there's some reason they don't wish their whereabouts to be known.
Edited to add:
Since you said a lead to 'cheap dog food' would be useful, here ya' go--this from the Louisville craigslist, which could be on the other side of the state from where they are, but so what, right?

Go to any Tractor Supply. They have cheap dog food. Since I don't know which end of Kentuky they're in, they might have to find a Farm and Fleet. Also, ANY feed store will have cheap dog food. How many dogs survived the wreck? Did they have accident coverage? Have they been able to meet with insurance adjuster; the vehicle was apparently totaled, so maybe they had comprehensive coverage? I think posters are not being cynical, but cautious? Ever see those spam, scam emails, "so and so is stranded in Bumfutch, Azbeckistan and, he is my ONLY son and he had a rack and I promise I will give your mone bak but I need tweentytousad us dollars, NOW!!!PLEES HURRY!!" those things tend to condition people to be cautious.
