Breeding german sheppard by Daves dog on 17 June 2012 - 10:13 |
| Never breed my dog before and I think its to late. She is a sable sheppard and is eight years old and never had pups. Is it to late for her and if not where to go to breed her as she is pure breed. Any info would be great. |

| If you are going to produce puppies, it is usually as well to be able to spell what they are. That is German SHEPHERD. Why on earth do you want to breed your bitch ? Yes, eight years is a bit too old for a first litter - as with people, the risks of something going wrong can increase with age; and while its perfectly possible, personnally I would not advise you to do it. If you have heard that it is in some way 'better' for a bitch to produce a litter than not, because its healthier for them, please ignore that advice as there is no scientific foundation for it. If you have a friend or family member who thinks they would like a puppy "just like" your bitch, please think very carefully about: 1 - whether it is worth the vet bills if anything goes wrong (eg maybe she'll need a Ceasarian) 2 - how you are going to find suitable homes for all the other puppies, extra to the one(s) you / your family want (there could be quite a few, not all litters are small) 3 - whether your bitch is healthy enough, both physically and genetically (what has she been tested for ?) 4 - whose dog you will take her to, and whether he also has all the health clearances he needs, before you inflict yet more dogs on a world in which there are arguably already too many. | This must be a joke? Breeding an 8 year old dog is like asking a 50 year old woman to have her first baby!!! Debby |

| Definitely NOT a good idea to breed her for a multitude of reasons already mentioned. In addition to those reasons, there are thousands of German Shepherds in shelters that need homes, with a large percentage of them being put to sleep. Please don't add to that by breeding your dog. Let her be and enjoy her. |

Why do you want to breed her in the first place? 8 is late to breed a bitch, and you need to know how to spell the breed before even thinking about breeding and selling pups. |

| I think you should do it, but I'd wait until next year with the WUSV. You will have pick of thee best males. besides, 50 is the new 40. |

| The UK Kennel Club will not allow a litter to be registered if the bitch is over 8. |

| in Germany you can breed till they hit there 9th birthday on the females. i think as long as they are in excellent health why not. well AKC is 12 years but thats toooo old. |

| Trixx - methinks that those various ages were not thought up with a first litter in mind, anyway. |

| Big smile..... You came to the right place for good information. Put your hard hat on though. Do all the medical tests that everyone recommends; the money is well spent. Do not do it to make money. It is not there. Be prepared to make hard decisions if needed; not for you, but for what is best for the puppies. If your gut says something is wrong, SOMETHING IS WRONG. No matter what every vet in the world tells you. Good luck and listen to the advice. |

| Everyone else. Please give good advise, not just the lecture. Make a list of everything they need to do before deciding on the mating. That goes further than anything else. |

I am not gonna touch this one with a 10 FT POLE. I might have to publish a book to get the message across. GO buy a puppy. yr |
