Koots: The only thing I am curious about though GSDfan, is how did you start the targeting of upper body during muzzle work with this dog? That is not evident in the vid but it is obvious it was done, so for the people learning it would be nice if you would explain that.

GSDfan: This dog has been trained on sleeve and suit, her primary target is the upper body. I knew she would target the arm on a run-by bite so I asked the decoy to suck his arms against his body figuring she would punch his tricep- armpit area which would acclimate her to hit center mass.

No matter where the dogs trained target is for bitework, they can and will eventually learn to punch center mass with the muzzle on. I decoyed for a very solid leg dog in a muzzle and he hit me very hard in the sternum, I was totally not expecting it and hurt ALOT. It was very clear this dog knew exactly what the point of the muzzle was.

This was that dog...it hurts just looking at these lol.  He ran a good distance and launched full speed.  Again this is a leg dog.

Ouch! That looks like a bruised boob hit!

Thanks for the explanation, GSDfan, of how this dog was started for targeting with the muzzle. When I was training with the police, we started the dogs orientation to hit the uppper body by having the decoy get on their knees just before the dog hit, and then transition to standing while the dog comes in for a hit. It doesn't take the dogs long to figure out that they can hurt the decoy by hitting center-mass, as you know, lol. There are many different ways to teach the dog to hit center-mass, and finding whatever works for each dog is key.

Yes thanks, I had planned on doing that too (decoy on knees) in the coming sessions as it will help with the anterior and posterior targeting of center mass. I initially took this approach using the lateral side of the body so I could keep the picture and decoy movement familiar to her thus most stimulating and least stressful.

Well, what you did sure worked with her, she didn't have any troubles orienting to the upper body hits. Carry on, lol.

0.09 sec/ 0.30 sec. 0.50 sec target is the arm.....

Decoy make  the same movement if he is wearing a sleeve.

Trainer/handler: Hans

Decoy: Robert Harris.

Training method AlpineK9 11 point training routine. Channeling from from defense to prey. From civil to equipment.   Suit is used only after all important proofing of civility of the dog.

Before detractors say that I should not use choker I will say this. I know , that is the consensus. But :
1/ but we teach the dogs to fight   the way we train . My dogs are on choker in every day life and not on flat.  That is why at certain level of training I use choker.
2/ LuvLuv is Houdini  and master of backing out of collar of any kind  except choker put on so called "wrong" or European way.  This is done  for the safety of the decoy.
