Susie, excellent post.

I think this may have been a mistype, though; 'Outside of the house off leash only...'

From the what I got from your post, I believe you meant to say *ON* leash only.....is that correct?

Hi Sorry for your bad experience, First off I'm no expert in this field. I also have a scared Mal pup, not as bad as yours, but still scared of people as well as other dogs. We've got her in puppy class, we've been to 3 so far, it's helping. We try to introduce her to people as much as possible, it's hit and miss. Same as dogs With children it's more difficult. They get scared when she starts to bark, it's a work in progress. So hope you keep trying.
Good luck

Tstav, maybe you should talk to the OP ( you may PM him ).

I really feel bad for people who didn´t get the dog of their dreams, on the other hand dogs are living creatures, all of them different, but none of them worth less. And all of them deserve a good life...

Police K-9 trainer and parents are no mark of excellence, unfortunately lots of people use that as a marketing scheme.
From your description of her issues, no training or socialization will correct her issues. You may see some improvement, but nerves aren't something you can "band-aid" well.
I would suggest returning her, unless you are for keeping her as a project dog. Just keep in mind she does not sound like a protection prospect.
Good luck!

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for her

HI, Susie Like I said in my post I'm no expert in the field. On saying that we adopted a 10 month old mal that was bought for protection but supposedly didn't have the drive. He's been with us for 5 yrs now. He is a great dog, he excels at agility, nosework, and also does dock diving. But he's terrified of children, we just have learned to avoid them as much as possible when we can. So I guess what I'm trying to say is here is there is always a chance with hard work and time.

Tstav, it´s not about being an expert, but about a dog owner who made the same experiences, and had/has the same problems. Sometimes it´s good to know that there are others, and that you are not alone.

The OP seems to like the pup despite the problems he mentioned, I think he´d feel better in case he is able to share his experiences with others.

Just my guess

While this is not ideal I have seen several Mals like this. Dog arrives and acts like it has not drive and is terrified. A couple weeks later and they perk right up. Again not ideal but not necessarily a complete bust.

If you keep her, your best bet is to not force her to meet anyone or anything. Let her interact with the world on her own terms. Just take her out alot and play with her everywhere. Stay out of puppy classes (those are a waste of time generally) and find a trainer that knows working dogs.

Just wanted to say Thak You to all the great responses about this topic". I have learned a lot from just your replies. We are taking the pup back today and have another one coming from Ruidoso in March. I am very greatful to all of you and thanks for your honesty.
