Time will tell .. I would say Mal or Mal/GSD mix

Looks like more Mal than GSD to me, but could be a cross of the two if you're not sure of the breeding.

I'm with Koots--I don't see any GSD, I just see a baby Malinois. That little wedge of a head topped with those big ears say "Mali" all the way to me.

Definitely Malinois

Thanks for your opinion guys/ladies, i really appreciate that. I'm those who has had a hard time telling puppies apart. She isn't a heavy boned, and her ears aren't as ginormous as those gsd puppies, but her straight stare sometimes looks just like a gsd, and her coat looks typical of gsd as well, seems very heavy on the dark pigmentation. Maybe malinois isn't very popular here, ive had many who came up to me and asked whether it is a gsd puppy, therefore i thought it's best to ask those who are familiar with the breed here.

I got this puppy from a guy who has a training school for dogs in protection, detection, obedience work. He has malinois and gsd, but i was told this is a purebred malinois. The plan is to enrol her in the seller's school once she is old enough, then she can be our part time bodyguard when she join us on hiking. Wink Smile

As i never had malinois puppies before, can i also get some advice on their level of activity at 2months?. We play for 90 mins (chasing/running/swimming/tugging), two times a day, and when it's over, she will sleep. Perhaps i was expecting a hyper dog without an off switch from all the reading of malinois, but is this normal? Perhaps as she gets older, i can expect more hyper-ness from her?

My purebred male red and black sable GSD looked just like that as a puppy.

Sam at 13 wks old

This is him now:

Sam at 3 years old

Pups can change alot as they grow. Found that out the hard way. Sam was very dark when we first got him and quickly grew lighter much to our shock. We wanted a solid black male at the time, though the closest we found as a "black" sable. However we soon learned the breeder didn't know his colors at all and thus we got a red and black sable instead of the nearly all black sable we thought we were getting. His coat was also short as a puppy but he slowly fluffed up to a normal stock coat. Kinda wish he sayed short coated as he sheds way too much.

Sorry, Lunastar, but the OP's pup and your pup have completely different head and body structures. Your pup is clearly a baby GSD, while the OP's, at least to me, is clearly a baby Malinois.

Copied the pictures over to this page for easier comparison.

Hi Lunastar, you have a very handsome puppy there!

Though their shading is similar, with their black overspray look, but i do agree with Hexe on their bone structure difference. It is easier to compare with Hexe's post who helped put our puppy's pics together, i felt your puppy has a skull with a more 'intense' look with its bone structure, and he sure looks bigger boned too!

But nevertheless, i have had friends who would swore the puppy is a working line sable gsd puppy, perhaps due to them being lighter boned.

I thank all of your opinion, all so very helpful. I had been hitting walls by reading the standards for the breeds, because they are the same!  ( except for the body part)

If any of you helpful forumers have had a malinois puppy with this sable- like coloration before, please do share. I'm very curious how it will develop as it matures.

Malinois...or Mal with maybe 1/4 GSD in there....no more. Sable means nothing. Lots of dogs are sable.  Structure is Mal- croup, front assembly, head, pasterns...Mal, Mal, Mal.

Pup looks absolutely nothing like Lunastar's puppy.
