My 12 week old GSD pup,was recently suddenly out of the blue screaming and unable to be either touched or to walk properly.
I called a vet out as there was no way I was going to try to move him myself.
I live in the UK, and they seem to not be very aware of this disease. I had him xrayed, and bloods done, and they seemed to be looking for auto immune diseases that the prospects seemed dire.
His white blood cells were up, he screamed in pain his temperature was high, they weren't able to get it down for many hours. and even the opioids weren't having much affect and the Metacam dose they gave him made him poorly.
They had so little to offer him and suggested he came home and if he didn't improve then maybe euthanasia was the best option!
I had all his records forwarded to my homeopathic vet and after him seeing my boy and providing him with the mixed homeopathic remedy Belladonna 1M and Eupatorium perfoliatum 30x, my little one had responded and was no longer howling in pain and able to move with relative ease.
I am hoping this helps others out there who face this awful painful disease, as I don't think I will forget hearing him scream so badly and not be able to help him.
Another remedy was given that was personal to his constitution, as he is very sensitive and this calmed him and helped him over the shock and pain of it all.
it's now over a week since this occurrence and he is so much h better and no fever, walking ok but a little stiff at times but continues to rest and have further doses of his remedies.
He wants to play and rough and tumble but for now he is being watched and cared for so he doesn't over do anything with my other dogs.

Commiserations Jackie, Pano is a pain in the butt. You may find that it waxes and wanes. One good thing about it is that they do eventually 'grow out' of it.
Bit confused about the info that your vet didn't recognise what to do with it; it usually features in 'the list of GSD complaints' that UK vets tend to trot out at the sight of a Shepherd ! (like other breeds don't have some common ailments).

I'm so glad to hear your baby is doing much better...We believe in Homeopathic type remedies and actually use them first before using any Chemical type medications...We try very hard not to use any chemicals on our dogs...There's always side effects to them...
I wish Human and Animal Doctors would learn more about Homeopathic type remedies...
My wife researches and uses a lot of the Homeopathic type remedies for both our dogs and us too...
I've had "kidney stones" twice and had to be operated on for them...I then got another "kidney stone" and was waiting for my doctor to assist me with the problem...My doctor made an appointment to have a "Ultrasound" but in the meantime it was suggested to me to use a Homeopathic type remedy...I passed the stone and then the ultrasound came back clear...So I certainly believe in Homeopathic type remedies and would suggest to people to at least open their minds to this type help...Usually there are very little or no side effects with Homeopathic remedies...

I was appalled by the sheer ignorance of this by the vet who was focused only on a dire outcome of this sudden illness.
I would of thought it was something they would look for straight away yet they were fazed by his stubborn fever, and even more so with the high white blood cell count.
My poor little pup was in so much pain and the best of comforting words I got from the vet were if he doesn't get better then euthanasia maybe the next move!
I am now looking into finding a better vet as now my own vet of 26yrs has now passed all there seems to be is temp vets who have little real experience and that's not what I want for my animals.
My homeopathic Vet was also not impressed and thank God I had him to go to as within an hour or so my pup was better.
I had no idea that what's called growing pains could be so severe, and have never witnessed it before this little lad.
I realise lots of people don't go on homeopathy much but always it's far outweighed anything I have tried allopathic and the speed of its almost magical.
Many of my dogs have lived many years more after being sent home die in old age and other things so I thought it worth putting out here for anyone willing to give it a go.
I really don't feel that the vets who I saw knew much about shepherds at all, sadly.

Hi Bob, yes I did try several remedies while waiting for the vet, sadly it was non of the ones that I used hit the spot.
Lukas my baby, is also homeopathically vaccinated as well, my other dogs also. Lukas dad had a bad reaction to the normal vaccination and I am so glad I stuck with homeopathic for lukas as it seems he is quite a sensitive little chap as he didn't do well on Metacam the vets have him while he was there for 2 days.
I am glad you find homeopathy helpful as I do,and only hope others may give it a go.
Sadly my homeopathic vet isn't 24 hr, or emergency so I had no choice but to go to the ordinary vet, and I hate to think of.the cost of the pretty useless treatments got and overnight stays!

the pano I've had experience wtih over the years showed up very clearly on x-ray of long bones. vet's usually recommended low protein food, though I'm not sure that really helped much.

It seemed to be a genetic condition and in most cases they eventually grow out of it.

Hi Rik, I sure hope he grows out of it quickly as he suffered so much. However, I now have the remedies o. standby in case he ever should need further help.

Yeah; I think the 'growing pains' thing ought to be dropped off the edge of the planet, 'cos it's really not an adequate description of Pano !
(I think there sometimes may BE 'growing pains' but only in the sense of mild aches 'n pains asssociated with soft tissue and growth plates, affecting us as well as dogs). As Rik says, Pano - when lesions shows themselves at all on Xray, it isn't always obvious - is more about the long bones.
I won't comment on the homeopathy. If its working for you, fine. One of the other factors in Pano is often said to be diet, though. You have not said what you feed your pup ? Certainly feeding the best diet you can would appear to give you a head start, although I would caution that every dog is a different individual and some react better to some foods / ingredients than others. I have had a youngster get Pano even though he was extremely carefully fed, no expense spared, and the rest of his litter, fed the same, were fine with no sign of it.
