Joanna, I 100% agree with you. These people who purchase pre-trained dogs are killing the sport for Mr Average.Cheque book champions thats all most of these people are.I for one get tired of seeing the same names year after year.I don't believe this is sport.A bit like football without payment caps. Bring in Handler owned & trained for all trails I say.The sport of schutzhund needs more young people & new blood.People must have a goal & to represent your country is the highest goal.I just wonder how many young people give up the sport knowing they have bugger all chance of this honour. The Axe Man

The top trainers - why did they sell these world beating dogs in the first place? probably for money. And they also know that credit will go to the new owner/handler. If they feel that they are well compensated for the lack of acclaim by money, why should others have a problem. The dog moving to a new handler would typically work at lower or equal efficiency. This would mean, the competitors should benefit and their dogs should be winning more over these purchased champions. Does this happen often? sadly not. so what are we crying about? I am not getting it.

I disagree, the team should be composed to WIN.... phantom wrote: "I have been trying all my life to get that one dog who has what it takes from scratch without success yet. " My dogs problem is he is limited by his handler! HAHA oh wait, I am the handler!! Just a thought to remember, alot of these people have "been there done that" and now are looking strictly to compete. The majority of the dogs that compete were dogs that did not reach their full potential before. Escobar is a perfect example. He was imported around 13 months, Ed Miller titled him to Sch3. Why he didn't do better?? I suspect just the chemistry wasn't there. Debbie Zappia polished the dog. Should she be excluded from the team?? A friend of mine competed 4 times at the WUSV with a dog that had import score in the 250's. He polished the dog to be consistant V scorer and winning the 2000 Nationals. Should he have been excluded? Are these 2 examples of people who do not know how to train dogs? I believe the problem still remains, the availability of dogs has not yet reached the level of expertise in training here in the USA. It is a progression. We are now seeing dogs that were trained here and in some instances bred here on the team. You would not have seen this 10-15 years ago. Hopefully in 10-15 years it will be so common that we won't even bother with a discussion like this. Bastin was a rarity, don't loose too much sleep over him being on the team. Let's look at the big picture. Ed

There are some trainers who are capable to bringing the best out of a dog, even he had been previously titled and did not do so well under his/her original handler. The competitive working person requires hips and drive in their dogs. The beginner may not recognize the potential in a given animal. The fact that some of these dogs that were perhaps also rejects in their previous lives with their original handler and achieve greatness, is a tribute to the training and work and belief of that individual in his partner (I mean dog partner here). Many dogs, would not reach their potential without these tremendous Dog Sport enthusiasts. And it is so beautiful watch a team that can perform in sync. And usually, sad as it may be, they only have that one dog that gets them to the podium and remain the rest of their lives in search of him/her again. Congratulate those that get there and don't minimize the work and dedication.
