I don’t know if Oli can do this or not, but maybe he can make a section for people that they can click on, for Reputable Breeders that people have used, and know the health of dogs instead of depending on the ads that could be scams.

Good idea!

It's a good idea,

The thing is that it would need a lot of thought to prevent even further scamming.

I.e. Some want's to scam and simply creates a few extra accounts just to "verify" the account that will do the scamming.

So a system where only people that have been members for at least 6 months could vote, the older the member (time since registering) the higher the vote counts.Who voted for would be visible and you could see f.i. every user that member has voted for.

Would have to also deal with issues like reputable breeders not using this system or someone who uses it irregular like. Someone could add an account as "vomFamous" claiming to be the breeder of the kennel while not being one. Would get a lot of up votes and perhaps scam a lot of people.

Other solution could be to charge a 0.99$ for each classified, but these scammers can get a hold on a stolen CC or simply pay someone desperate for cash 150$ to buy a 100$ prepaid card.
Another solution would be to require people to verify their account with Facebook/Google/Paypal and the site would list them publicly on the site (for logged in members only)
That way you could check if it looks like an actual account or not (a month old facebook account is very big indocator of a scam)

So perhaps the solution is to put in a multilayered change where a combination of the above is employed to the extent it's too much fuss for the amount to be scammed.

Best, of course, is to check if your personal/professional bank offers escrow services and simply only deal with breeders that support that. Would need to go both ways, (escrow services area easy to fake) .

Scamming in the modern world is an art form. With machine learning and these complex computers that are easily accessible huge corporation are being scammed by the tens of millions. They can fake an email so well that you are certain that you know who you are talking to. Phone calls can be faked with ease, just google "deepfake videos"

Then there is the legal issue, I don't want to get sued just because someone says "The site has scam prevention implemented so why should I do any additional checks?"

Oli IMOp you are better to leave well enough alone because anybody looking for a GS or a Mal an simoply ask from the regular posters here , some very very wonderful members at that ,where they could find the dog that would fit what they are looking for. Better for people to share their OPINIONS and their EXPERIENCES when simply asked by the OP as now stands . I have never seen on the forum anyone denied any adviceor shared experinece when asked about obtaining dogs from the members . In that way the one cannot claim that PDB web site acts as a bona fide referral service or a promoter of any of the breeders . All that someone has to do is ask the members ... And if they don't ask the members for advice then shame on them ..They don't deserve to see a list of reptuable breeders , which by definition can be subjective , either . For whatever it is worth saying ..

How about an index of members who volunteer to be contacted by people who are looking to get a dog and would like a reference to a reputable breeder in a certain area(s). It could be organized by country, state (or areas) for which the member has good contacts. Any member who would like to share their contacts or expertise can volunteer their names for the list, and including the country, state (or areas) of their 'reputable breeders' locations. This way, a person looking for a reputable breeder in, say, BC, Canada, can look up the members who can recommend a breeder in that area.

Centurian

I did not mean to do a disservice to any of the members on PDB, to Oli, or to the Moderators.
Many new people come on here looking for their first GSD, and to a new person that could be overwhelming.
Years ago, a lot of GSD breeders were on PDB, but left for whatever reason.
It was just a thought on my part to try and save people from a lot of heartbreak and lost hard earned money by the scammers.

A bit of PDB breeders left many many years ago, (like 10 years ago) when we started to put a curb on infighting in the forums.

They (forums) where a wild wild west back then, a bit more civilized now. Many of them simply stopped using the forums and only use the classifieds.

There are many tools you can use to check for basic things.

  • A users profile will show when she/he joined. few days or few months is a bad sign for a seller or for a buyer (important thing here for legit sellers)
  • Use a reverse image search for the posted image, if the image comes up somewhere else as a completely different dog, its a fake. https://www.tineye.com/  (shows only exact matches) and https://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en (shows similar images)
  • Check official age of website. If its a full site its very easy to check, if its a sub domain, simply send an email to the main website. like vomperfect.wordpress.com , just ask the wordpress team.

  • You have a phone number? Check where it's from, like https://www.melissa.com/  still not sure, call the registered company and check if it's prepaid/postpaid/anonymous

There are tons of advice out there to at least help you spot 90% of the scammers.

But I think I will add a section on each ad that shows 1. when the user signed up and 2. date of first ad (yes, I have that info :) )

But that still leaves out protection for legit sellers that also get scammed. Very hard for me to help there. Especially when "buyers" want to continue using emails or phone.,

Too Little, too late, or..
and what to do about when gsd breeders are recommended and still sell 2000 dollar pets. if a person wants a pet they will go get one for free on craigslist or adopt one from a shelter, not come to PDB and look for recommendations. For example I got a paperless (so far, told they were coming soon but no word on when that 'soon' was) puppy who pees (fear or excitement, not sure which but a sign of lack of confidence either way) sometimes when she meets people, who can't be fed the day we are going anywhere due to car sickness (this makes socialization fun because then the dog is focused on getting something to eat, it's a puppy and it's hungry) And despite being from 'working lines' is showing no more drive than any average non working line dog, and is more like a golden retreiver it seems. Our beagles and dobermans had way more drive, tenactiy and confidence than this gsd., and even better grips as puppies and most were from american show lines, not working/hunting lines.
I will not likely ever trust any add on here to buy a gsd puppy from again,

I can only answer for myself but when I'm looking for a dog...I look at a Kennel...but that kennel doesn't ever list who is the breeder...Who owns the kennel...I reject even looking at a site that doesn't tell me who the person is that's in charge of the kennel...
We all have and use a "User's Name" but I would like to know who the person is that's behind that name...If you don't want to make that available that's your choice but what do you have to hide...
A "User's Name" isn't the same as a "Kennel Name"...and I think all of this is very pertinent to me...
I...as a breeder feel like I represent the breed and I might have puppies/dogs to sell but if I don't have what a buyer wants I'm always happy to suggest good kennels/people to check out and work with...I also tell the other side of the coin and let them know who's not good to work with and why...
Just my view on buying a puppy/dog...
I also have a major concern on the way people write an "Ad" for a dog or litter that's for sale...A lot of people leave out very important information that's needed to inform a buyer...
