I have had 2 correctly fitted Sprenger pinch collars open up accidentally. They don't need to be fitted incorrectly to open on their own. One had a clip. How it happens is still a mystery to me, it's all I can do to open a link myself. The first time happened years ago at a training class so the dog didn't go anywhere. The 2nd time was my current dog that wanted to kill a woodstork, but platzed on command right next to a lake and a gator. I consider myself lucky and don't push the envelope anymore. I use a dominant dog collar or a choke collar in addition to the pinch. My current dog is very obedient but I will always err on the side of caution when I am working her on a pinch (or walking her next to a lake where there are birds taller than she is and gators).

Leerberg has an interesting article about this on his website.
