My question is, the breeder of our male shepherd, Riverside Shepherds, Copenhagen, NY told us that all of his breeder dogs were from Germany. Our pups AKC papers show his parents were from Canada and Serbia so we're a little confused? Can someone clarify for us how lineage is determined and we're not sure if 'lineage' is the correct term. Thank you in advance.

He may simply have meant they are of German type breeding, (as different from Ambred, AKC SL) rather than directly out of Germany themselves. Many breeders use imported German dogs. Some via other countries lke Serbia, Czechia, Holland... these are all more recently of German bred ancestry than a good many dogs available outside Europe (even though all GSDs go back originally to German stock).

If not, you have caught him out in a lie. Maybe he did not expect that you would actually read the paperwork - some owners don't bother.

Have you got any statement in writing, eg an e mail, that his dogs are German born ? Had you done a Search for Riverside Kennels through PDB ? Did you do any research on breeders before you picked this one ? Were you not satisfied with all the answers you got a few months ago when you asked us this question ?

Not surprised at all, do you live in the Copenhagen/Watertown Area? I do.

From what I know, he usually imports through Serbia and Czech Republic etc.

A dog can be registered with the CKC and still have German bloodlines.

Did you get one of his Showlines or one of the Working lines that he has?

Who are the parents? is your dog listed on pedigree database?

I don't know the breeder or kennel, so take the following possibilities and thoughts with a GIANT grain of salt, because they are ONLY POSSIBILITIES and NOT FACT

Took a look at the breeder's website, then the first stud listed. His breed survey is from Serbia. The dog could have been born in Germany, but I don't know without digging.

Photos on the website show the breeder is involved with military/veterans (Operation Beethoven) and the Watertown area contains Fort Drum, etc. It is possible the breeder or someone he/she knows was stationed in Europe and got the dog and it may have been more feasible time, timing, distance, or money-wise to do the events and breed survey in Serbia than Germany, especially if the person was stationed in Serbia, etc.

If the breeder or someone he/she knows was stationed in Europe, especially Serbia, Croatia, and/or Czech, and/or having gotten a Serbia breed survey, then it would be logical to have contacts in Serbia, Croatia, and/or Czech, and import from or through them because of trust and maybe $ People in Serbia, Croatia, and Czech would possibly have contacts in Germany to get dogs born in Germany and then send to the U.S. or sell to US military personnel/family in Serbia, etc.  It's also possible the breeder is from Europe and moved to the US, and still has family and contacts in Europe.

NOTE: Many people outside of military/LE wear military style/pattern clothing, so a photo with such clothing means nothing as far as indicating military affiliation. That area of NY had some awesome hunting 40 years ago.  That area is also a fairly short drive to the Canadian border, so reasonable to expect imports from Canada.  Also exchange rates, import taxes and requirements, etc. could confer advantages, even if indirect.

There is a thread if you do a search under Has anyone ever dealt with Von Der Riverside German Shepherds if I remember correctly.

Was the father from Canada?
The "breeding stock" may be his female and the father is just a "hired gun". If that is the case, he has been truthful.

Most, if not all Serb dogs, back out to West German Showlines. They're less expensive than those with the "SZ" papers. A buyer should also do their homework. There are Canadian breeders of world quality. Haus Juris comes to mind.

Charlie, last time around*, we identified the stud dog and he was, eventually, listed on the Riverside website. So we assumed he is / was living there.

* I'd put up a direct link to her earlier enquiry, but something stops me being able to make links on here.  Its only a few months and maybe one page away; you can get to it just as quickly by clicking on User Info for Truman's Mom and then her Forum Posts (all of which so far except the top one are of the older thred).

There's just one other ref to Riverside  - the thred MrDarcy listed above - which a PDB site search throws up. Its from  2016 and is a general enquiry with not much known, but no great recommendation either !  At least 2 members here think its no more than a puppy farm ...
