I have said it many times before, I will say it again. A dog is a distraction, not the be all end all in a dangerous situation. Dogs do not end fights when an assailant is armed with a weapon, 2 rounds in the CNS end the fight.
I live in a country where I can own and carry a gun and I do, legally, and daily, I have for several decades.
First, I will not send my dog on anyone that I see has a weapon in their hand, second, when I do send my dog on anyone, I am RIGHT there, on top of the dog and the would be assailant. I am not there just for moral support, I am there to kick that person in the head or his balls and give my dog a better advantage.

Some people may not like that, they may call it not fair, whatever...TOO BAD. At the end of the day, when involved in a serious encounter that I had to deploy my dog, my job is to see that we go home, end of all discussion.
Now, on the other hand, most people will and should leave their dogs to fight/distract the bad guy, while they run away to save themselves, alas, I am NOT one of those people, so, I give me and my dog whatever advantage I can.
There is no situation in which a bad guys is armed, possibly on some type of drug and actively fights the dog with a weapon, in which the dog does not get very seriously hurt or dies.
As soon as people realize that, they will be able to clearly see a situation for what it is and not what they imagine it to be.

I would also like for anyone who thinks differently to post a video of what their version of a protection dog or its training should look/be like so that the rest of us who are uneducated on the subject can be informed.
I am really looking forward to the submission of such videos as I am always open to learning more about dogs and their training.

Hired Dog

it's not about bravery or cowardice of the handlers at all. handler can be female, older person or person with disability, kid. it's simply about if that dog really been taught to confront, before deploying for such purpose. crisis situation can develop into many different unpredictable ways. but in any case it should be clear - the dog, who been taught to control opponent's movement, won't hang on one spot, when opponent's move posses threat and thus have greater chance to incapacitate opponent and survive that fight, irregardles of action or inaction of handler.
as for video, unfortunately youtube flooded mostly by useless spectacle, positioned as protection.
very rare videos which can be called educational from practical point.
few years ago i have seen video of LE competition. the dogs and their preparedness was quite differ from one, can be seen on sport show. but even there i noticed, from dozen of participating dogs only two during attack did target an armed hand of decoy.

I wrote a long piece explaining certain things, but, why, so, I will leave you with this....what you are proposing, biting a hand, etc, is financial suicide in today's world, for you, the trainer who trained that dog and anyone else that can be milked off of money.

Valk, its stupidity to do such work in 3 months old, stupid to work a pup in defence, I like a dog that is balanced, but to say you need to work a dog on defence or suspicion at 3 months in order to make him grow up that way is wrong IMO

by ValK on 08 April 2021 - 15:04

duke, what folks doing in your video nothing else but establishing of base for future protection training.
whatever, nowhere i said how to and from what age puppies a must be worked in defense. that's pup owner should decide from own knowledge and experience in regard of particular pup. i only pointing out mistake, which is common in handling and rising pup and which goes to be imprinted from young age.
if you curious about my personal view - there no limit in age to begin preparation of pup for future career.
one can start it from stage when pup become active in own actions and demonstrate curiosity to surrounding environment.

by duke1965 on 08 April 2021 - 16:04

you point out mistake IN YOUR OPINION, so we have different point of view, its same mistake when people say if you work a pup on sleeve he will not bite civil without later on, good balanced qualities cannot be trained in, nor trained out
