My dog dearly loves fireworks (and can tell the difference between them and gunfire). So on Friday, when I asked her if she wanted to go see the fireworks she got really excited and happy.

We got there and, of course, they had been canceled. Stupid me, I didn't think about COVID19 since it was outside and people have been encouraged to go outside all along here, of course with social distancing, and things are opening back up.

So now my dog's really mad at me (sigh).

GSCat, thanks for the breakfast-time giggle ! I too used to have a dog who enjoyed watching fireworks with me, I really miss her sometimes. My dogs ever since have not reacted either way, although the last but one, the very elderly rescue bitch, was a bit apprehensive ... until she went deaf.I could pull the curtains so she didn't see the light show.

It funny how some can discriminate, isn't it - my other dogs, and those I've worked with looking after, all seemed to regard fireworks / gunshots / thunder as the same, intrusive noises that they were not really bothered by. Vida did not seem to notice thunder or gunfire or back-firing cars, but she did seem to recognise fireworks, even when I wasn't taking her outside. Don't remember her sulking because she didn't get to go & see them, though.

Someone was letting some off yesterday evening up the road here; dunno whether they were homesick American Independence Day celebrators, or NHS Anniversary weekend / re-opening of English pubs / something else fans. We only heard the bangs, weather didn't allow sight from here of the display.

But in all seriousness, I do wish firework displays were kept to a notified minimum, and restricted times. Too many peoples' pets (dogs / cats / horses & others) are very frightened by them. If you don't know when they are coming or who is setting them off, you can't prepare.

Where we used to be, she and I had to be able to tell the difference, so I taught her. The dog loves thunderstorms, lightning, rain, chasing raindrops, thunder snow...

Used to have a Sibe whose favorite fireworks were the ones that looked like wagging white husky tails, preferably the ones that whistled. She was vain about her tail, too.
