Introducing a working line pup into the household as opposed to a showline female pup? - Page 1

What is the difference if any in introducing a working line pup into the household as opposed to a showline female pup?

I have a 6 year old showline male gsd and we are planning to make an addition of a working line female who I will train in IPO. (The male has always lived inside and never stayed outside overnight)

I plan the same with my female pup. She will reside in the home as well. I am thinking while the female is getting used to her surroundings and new environment as well as potty train I will keep her in a crate overnight near me.

We are an active family and I am self-employed so I am almost always home except for trips to the grocery store post office etc. I always look for an excuse to take my dog with me 

Is there any special way to introduce them as not to have my young female lose her “fire and dominance”?

The male loves to play and still thinks he is only 6 months old in many ways and the young female is very energetic dominant as well as playful and about ready to come home. I am not too concerned about him hurting her in the way of biting etc but he will certainly let her know he is the boss over her if needed.

Gradual, staged introductions so they can get used to each other's presence. When they are together, supervise at all times just so the male doesn't overly dominate the pup (it may end up being the other way around if the pup has 'jam'). Don't let them get too 'rough and tumble' until the pup is big enough to keep her own physically in the play session, just so she doesn't get dominated by the male.

I wouldn't like to generalise TOO much, but it is very likely you will find that with a male and a female being introduced, the female - even though the younger - will very soon have the male 'wrapped around her paw' and become boss of him ! Even more so because if she is Working lines she'll probably have a lot of spirit. (Is that the 'jam' ?)

Everything Koots has said is highly relevant & useful, but I honestly don't think you are likely to have too many difficulties here !

I'd be more concerned about the damage a high spirited Working puppy could do to my home, if I failed to supervise enough and if the older boy does NOT sit on her ! Have fun !

Yes, 'jam' in this case means high-spirited, enthusiastic, full of character.

I have the reverse right now and as for them playing try to keep it out of the house. Pup gets to playing forgets about pottying until too late for you to intervene/train.

Really slows down house training if you allow. 

If you are going to train your new female in IPO, I would keep her separated from the male for at least six months, with some brief, supervised interaction. Actually, much longer separation would be better. In foundation training, you want to be the center of your dog's world, not another dog that you will not be able to compete with in terms of attention. If you keep the dogs together, more good things will likely come to your new female from your male than you, sabotaging your foundation training.
