1.) Instruct and discipline a dog like a two year old child.

2.) Reread: Theory of Mind.

3.) Enjoy reading it with a glass of holiday eggnog spiked with a shot of rum and a sprinkle of nutmeg on top.

Now my own personal observation leads me to observe the leaking of drives as the direct result of failure to proof the training, or simply through the absense of training or discipline aiming to arrest the displaced exuberance of the leaky action.

I already said that the dog's compliance depends on drives and motivation, IMO. Is the dog going to get a reward for compliance, and that is what the dog chooses, or is the dog avoiding a correction for non-compliance? What motivated the dog to choose one over the other? Drive to do what the handler asks vs drive to pursue an independent choice will be heavily influenced by the environment/conditions , the innate drives/instincts of the dog, and the level of training/conditioning the dog has.     "Self-discipline" is not really what the dog is doing, but rather the dog is making a choice to comply or not, the choice being influenced by already-stated factors.   Black & white, not psychologically-motivated ideas such as self-discipline.

No, they are not the only two people still reading; if I can ask a question or add anything worth saying, I'll do so. Until then I've nothing to write, but in the meantime, it is quite fascinating, and has already been said, a good topic, more relevant to this site than many subjects. Even if it is a bit of a struggle, given that some posts are not easy to follow because they are repetitive, long-winded, and full of typos !

I am reading too, for this board is like my morning paper. I have been a breeder/trainer for more than 50 years, now retired this board keeps me in connection with the breed and today dog world.

Resend archeological finds show that the human / dog relationship date back to 33000 years. In fact the dog is the first animal domesticated by human. Through the years humans manege to create the most amazing breeds preforming the most amazing tasks on behalf of humanity all over the world. Without any means on witch they could share knowledge. Everyone on there own relying only on human intuition. Long before any one thought to write any thing about training or breeding dogs.

Through the years i watched theories and methods regarding dog training come and go. To me training technics are useless without the intuition to apply them correctly. Without the feeling, the connection to read  the dogs feedback. As both trainer and dog are individuals there are to many variables. For every situation we may use to proof a theory there is another one to disprove it. There are no facts only believes. Some like to present their believes as facts but at the end that is all they really are.

My point is, to me successful dog training is 20% knowhow 80% intuition.
