How long does it normally take your female German Shepherds to deliver a whole litter, from the first to the last puppy? What is the quickest amount of time and the longest it has taken in your experience?

How many pups you talking about popping out.

Litter of one half-hour,   litter of two 24 hours, litter of 13 15 hours from the time the plug came out to last pup.  Condition of females and size of her and the pups will also make a difference as well as how comfortable she is.

So general a question.  Is there something specific you want to know.

Thank you for your response, Western Rider. I was curious, particularly because of a female we have that took over 24 hours to deliver both of her litters (litter of 9 and litter of 8). I was wondering if it was actually normal for them to take that long.

Another factor is that while many litters (however many pups) come at a fairly regular pace, some others 'stop & start', to the extent sometimes that something known as 'secondary inertia' sets in. Sometimes this can be fixed by simply letting the bitch have a walk around the backyard, to get her moving again; sometimes however you need to call in the Veterinarian. So if that happens, you can add maybe an hour or two, at least, to the total time it takes !

The shortest time I had was 8 pups in a little over 1.5 hours. The longest was 14 hours for 9 pups, with several hours in a single pause.

I wont say 24 hours for 8-9 pups is normal for every dog, but since your girl is a repeat offender, it may be normal for her.

I really like to give it about l/2 hour to l hour in-between really is what I am comfortable with, however, as the bitch gets tired, walk her, then it will help to stimulate whelping also be sure she has enough calcium in her system to get through the process. I think 24 hours is too long. But as stated above since it is the bitches 2nd time doing that maybe for her that is going to be her normal. Personally I would have her at the vet's office over about 8-l0 hours or before. BOL Nan
