Susie-
I do write that I don’t think they will find one gene and that it is a multiple gene issue too.

Perhaps some pups will survive the ‘blue pools” becasue they are genetically more dry and tight dogs. The dogs with tight skin and tight lower lips will not be as susceptible as the ones with loose skin folds, skin that is easily pulled up or loose lower lips or general floppiness of structure.
Also, not all pups are tested. And even if there are bad radiographs, that doesnt mean the dog is not functional up to old age. There are dogs with bad pictures, that get along just fine until something else ends their life. We can’t only go by their pictures, but by their symptoms.
One can have pups from same litter that are dry or wet.
Different combo of genes in each puppy.
I agree, I think it is a combo of genetic+environment.

Jesse, good post...except the breakneck speed part.
Susie, the reason why not all have hd from the litter is; not all are the same size, not all are same loose ligaments, loose skin, fat, sloppy uncoordinated, etc.

Jesse, we answered same time! :-)

most of it is genetic...

We are not that far away from each other.

Joanro,
Yes we did. Old saying...”great minds think alike...post at the same time”. (Not saying mine is that great. Harhar.)
Susie,
Funny how often everyone is similar in thought when it comes down to it most of the time. Only it takes a lot of words to get there.

Me: Yes! That is what I have been trying to articulate for months...years! That is the genetics the researchers are seeing in common with the hd dogs...that is why there are so many ' markers'.

Jesse, yes, again you make very good sense.

by duke1965 on 25 August 2018 - 05:08

will disagree a bit, I think most of it is environmental

Question for discussion: So if we breed two HD severe dogs and raise the pups optimally from environmental perspective, we should expect very high percent of non dysplastic dogs?

by joanro on 25 August 2018 - 12:08

Gustav, no. Not if the two dogs look like this:

Duke, if the gsd is sloppy like the neoploitan pictured (and there are gsd that are very loose and baggy) then the best environment in the world won't help.

That is the genetic aspect of hd...so select out  slack flat muscled dogs with huge heads, loose fat skin, big fat splayed feet, dewlap like a Brahman bull, and the flews of a mastiff....in other words, select for tight muscular dogs like this:

[agrees with Joan 100%!!]

How I HATE those apple-domed skulls with loose, saggy flews and a dewlap under the neck!! Is ANYONE reading the breed standard anymore??

[Okay, a few of us are...]
