Joan-
That wolves would rather mate with coyotes, is a compelling argument against natural inbreeding.
And, lets not forget that we are animals, and inbreeding is tabu historically in all cultures...or..wait,,, were not some Egyptians Kings/Queens brothers and sisters? Too lazy to google, but anyway, it was never the norm. (Unless perhaps in extreme isolated areas)

But maybe dogs have such a large genetic pool, that it is less detrimental to do for one or two breed cycles.

PS: Interrelated doesn’t necessarily mean inbred.

Inbreeding within human society is tabu mostly in modern times. Except with Islam they have been inbreeding for 1400 years....

Daryl, I disagree with you.

A wolf would sooner kill a coyote if it wasn't "lonely", than avoid mating with it's sibling. Yes, there have been many crossovers with coyotes or domestic dogs, depending more likely on like-subspecies availability than some "instinct" to increase genetic diversity. And there is additionally, back crossing to same subspecies to introduce new non- preexisting traits, such as the black hair coat adopted from domestic dogs. But a wolf in a pack would sooner kill a coyote or domestic dog to establish territory dominance.

And who ever heard of Muslim inbreeding depression? They seem to flourish.

by joanro on 11 October 2018 - 22:10

Nobody said anything about musim inbreeding depression. But do some research about the genetic abnormalities in isolated populations.

Deryl, if there is a huge wolf pack, then duh, there is no need to breed with coyotes.
Do some research...there are many groups of coywolf hybreds in aras where the coyote has filled the vacuum as the wolf populations were reduced to the point where crossing over with coyotes is the only alternative.
You seem to pull stuff out of the air instead of stating supportable facts.

by astrovan2487 on 12 October 2018 - 01:10

In many rural Muslim communities where marriage to a first cousin is normal there is a huge percentage of the population born with birth defects and genetic diseases. Same goes for any isolated community that inbreeds, not just Muslims. There is a reason why inbreeding is so disgusting to most people and why most animals instinctually behave in a way to prevent inbreeding.

Joanro, there are "huge packs" all over my region of the country (MT, north of Yellowstone), but that does not mean these populations are "genetically diverse". There are also coyotes all over. And NO coywolf hybrids. Your theory doesn't support these facts, and you think I'm "pulling stuff out of the air". Coyotes go real quiet when wolves are passing through, and love is certainly NOT in the air!

Ha ha I agree with Joanro.
Inbreeding in nature happens but not all the time. Some inbreeding or linebreeding is very good but if you inbreed all the time you will have a problem.

by duke1965 on 12 October 2018 - 03:10

joan, that cheetas, white rhinos etc are endangered has nothing to do with inbreeding, but everything with human interferance

but please explain how wild anymals can find fresh blood to outcross to for thousands of generations, and why zebras look like zebras and german shepherds looks are all over the place
