Are we vaccinating our puppies too early, too many vaccines at once and repeating them too often? What effect does do the antibodies in the maternal milk have the outcome of early vaccinations? I'm asking these questions after a local veterinarian mentioned that she was thinking of vaccinating puppies at a later date after weaning, giving less vaccines at once and spacing out the vaccines over time. She says she is seeing an increase in auto-immune problems in dogs and that this may be because of the present suggested vaccination protocol for puppies. As I had a dog with a severe case of pannus this opinion caught my attention.

Your question is very appropriate. Years ago, rabies was required every year, and in most states it has been changed to 3 years.

My vet said that the vaccinations after 16 weeks are the most important, as the puppy's immune system is finally mature. Each set of vaccinations from 7 weeks until 16 weeks gives an increasing percentage of protection. The industry standard is every 3 weeks until 16 weeks, parvo 6 months later, and full set 6 months later, and then yearly for all except rabies, which in many states is every 3 years after two within 365 days.

Is this too much, could the yearly vaccinations be given every 3 years, is giving them all at once too much, do they cause autoimmune issues, I don't know.

Has anyone found any research studies that can be shared here?

There is tons of research. Dr. Dodds' protocol, which is being taught at the major universities, says parvo shot at 9-10 weeks, then again 3-4 week later and that's it. A 3rd is optional. Highest percentage of immunity garnered is after 12 weeks. For pups I am keeping for myself, I do one at 12 weeks. For pups I am selling, I do one at 9-10 weeks then have them return later or I send them home with the next one. That way I know the best available vaccine was used and it wasn't given in a 7-9-way cocktail. So far, so good.

The amount of new research is well worth the read
I too do not vaccinate like I used to
Research shows even the rabies vaccine is good for at least 7 years
Many vets joining in to stop killing our pets with over vaccination
Research also says it is the rabies vaccine causing so much cancer in dogs
I am a big research person and I research the research
Anymore. any vet calling for annual boosters is worried more their wallet than they are your pets

Can we have some information on worming also?

Depending were we live we also give our dogs, other than the vaccines, a whole slew of chemicals that are "suppose" to be safe for our dogs. Preventatives like Heartgard, Advantix, etc.. We also can vaccinate against Lyme Disease. That's quite a cocktail for potential lethal havoc. I'm sure the standards applied to what is given to pets are more forgiving that what is available for human use. I'm beginning to think that what is not good for me maybe also not be so good for my dog. Something to think about when the time comes to raise another pup.

All my dogs were vaccinated as pups and had their yearly boosters because that is what the veterinarians told me to do.
One of my bitches had pannus and in researching about pannus, I read about the dangers of over vaccination and the realation auto immune conditions.

I stopped getting the yearly boosters and will not have any future pups or adults vaccinated.

When I was younger, dogs were wormed once a year, then we were told twice a year, it then became the norm to worm every 3-4 months, and now vets tell us to worm every month. Next it will be every week.

Are we over vaccinating and worming our dogs? Yes we are!
