No one, but the austrian army know that. Do you really think they will disclose this kind of information? The victim was not a civilian, but a member of the army, so this is their internal affair.
Instead of keeping their armies, societies and people should redirect their resources to protecting the planet, planting the fields and training our dear shepherd dogs ( Belgian, German, etc) for positive activities like herding, search and rescue, therapy, company etc. and show the dog love, not just give it comands to execute and lock it in a kennel afterwards.

c'mon, what a top secret can be in use of dogs by certain institution. seems nowadays army mainly need dogs
for only two roles - explosive detection and watchdogs.

yeah, right. aggression can only be obtained through training and dogs killed the man accidentally during play :/
understandable situation, in which now this certain department is but it's not reason to produce for media such silly BS.
interesting that article mentioned breeds at facility and majority of dogs (41) are rottweilers. i was under impression this
breed was pretty much have been abandoned in use for work purpose.

I met a GSD dog when I was involved in club that had come off the floor and attacked his elderly owner when she was sitting in a chair.

no one understood why as it had been raised from a pup by this lady.

The training director of the club had some connection and somehow ended up with the dog or it would probably have been put down. It was a very nice, imo, B/R dog and did well in training but I do not know the end result, as I wasn't involved in that club much longer.

I do think the TD put up with no nonsense from any dog.

I said all that to say this, although I had GSD for a couple decades before this incident, my feelings were not hurt, I did not feel the TD was trying to say all GSD were sh## because of what this dog had done. I felt no need to defend the GSD as a breed.

I guess I just don't see why someone posting this article makes them an anti/whatever breed you choose or why someone feels the need to attack or feel threatened.

especially when the OP is probably just as happy and profitable to supply mals as any other breed.

jmo,
Rik

that is one total 100% misinformation to state that its trained behaviour, but maybe it is the true believe of the guy who wrote that, which makes it even worse

Some articles about army dogs:

https://www.stripes.com/news/belgian-malinois-no-better-dog-to-track-down-insurgents-bite-armed-terrorists-trainer-says-1.606044 https://metro.co.uk/2018/07/08/hero-dog-saves-british-soldiers-lives-by-ripping-out-terrorists-throat-7692375/ Fifty-sixty years ago the armies used German shepherds, now they've been using Belgians. For the same purposes.

What is wrong with military dogs ripping out the throats of terrorists?

Nothing! But I wanted to point out that these dogs must have special training ( much more than IPO/ IPG) in order to do that!
Plus the dog was muzzled while on patrol ( so how safe was he for his own soldiers?) and then they took off his muzzle and send him to kill which he did perfectly.
In the first article there was a study about how many accidents the army had with their own dogs.
