HerBazhen

Hello,

I am very new to professional training for Personal Protection. I have recently hired a small company to train my DDR GSD.

I worked with my boy (Merc) from 9 weeks, with a flirt pole, tug of war, and a soft bite pillow... I always made him the winner. At 6 mos old I took him to a training facility to find out if he would be a good candidate for personal protection training.

I have video of the first time Merc was "tested". ( First 2 vids...2 mins long total) It was the first time he had been tied....ever. (we live on a farm) To me he looked very promising. I was told I was starting to late with him, but they would work with him and see if they could bring him along. I was told to bring him back in 2 weeks That session was about 30 mins long.

The second time I took him he was tied, and they worked on targeting his bite on a bite pillow. He caught on well, and loved every second of it. That session went on for about 45 mins, with a little break in there some where. I was again told to bring him back in 2 weeks.

The Third session.... (5 short vids...total time about 7 1/2 min.) This time they started him on a hard sleeve . Merc was a bit hesitant at the new "toy". None the less he hit it, and got over it. The other new thing to him was the helper stroking him...which was distracting to him. Then there was the man with the sleeve's technique for getting Merc to release. ( I told him repeatedly...I have taught Merc "OUT".) Several times Merc yelped...it was not because he was excited, he was hurt. The trainer (owner) then said he had "lost his bite", and wanted to know what I had been doing with him. ( I had not worked with his bite at all. ) I said that I thought the new equipment might be the reason...as well as the technique being used for his release. So the trainer then got a bite pillow.....and later a whip ( you can see him hit Merc hard enough to make him yelp)...saying he just needed to be pissed off.... and toughened up. You can see some of this in the videos.

At the time of these last vids....Merc was 7 1/2 mos old... with no more than 2 1/2 hours structured training, (including the whole last session).

Since that day...Merc is hesitant on his bites. He used to have a very full bites, and not want to let go. Now he bites with his front teeth, and if you reach to touch him he lets go completely. I have not brought him back...because I think they may have messed up my dog. Im not experienced enough to make that call. If I am wrong I need to know. Please....give me you opinions !!
( EDIT TO ADD...You have to goto youtube to see the whole playlist...Can't figure you how to get the list here :-( )
Thank You, Sheri

For full disclosure, I am not a 'professional trainer', I have only been doing schutzhund and police dog training as a hobby for a long time, but will give my opinion.

Oh boy, this could turn into a real mess, both for your poor pup and the thread. In short, please do not do this to your young dog.   Is that the "trainer" giving the bite to the dog, and making him out, with you in the house, leaving your young dog all by himself?      Where are the handlers of these dogs?     Too much wrong.....

stop .. just stop ..
first , you re going to cause serious injury to the dog's neck , maybe hurt a vertebral disk . And , you are making to many mistakes. enough said .

I second the "too much wrong". Do NOT take your dog back there.

I saw this vid a few hours ago, and sat back waiting for the comments that I knew would come. This is starting at stage 3000, instead of stage 1. Way too much, too soon and too wrong.
I’m not an expert in bitework but I am qualified as an osteopath to say that using a flat collar at 6 mo like this...with the dog slamming into it and constant pressure is a dangerous game for his still soft vertebrae and trachea. A trachea collaps will ruin the pup for life. He does not yet have the neck muscles to withstand this type of pressure. This will ruin his neck sensitivity for more defined leash control which you will need for leash work and corrections. My advice besides not to go back there...Use a harness and handler holding the leash instead, and not a tree, for now.

Thank You...
I should have said anyone with experience !!

I am the owner of this pup... I am new to training PP...Or IPO... I have trained my own dog obedience....but nothing else. I went to a "professional" because I I thought it was the right thing to do. The men in these videos train K9's for police departments across wisconsin. . I have not brought my dog back because it didn't seem correct. I just needed anyone with more experience than I to confirm. My dog is not going back ! I just wanted to make sure I was not any more of an idiot than I am... I should have figured it out sooner :-(

Thank you for your Opinions! We will NOT go back !!

you need to consider few base points before beginning PP training.
1. determination if dog will fit for such purpose.
2. if yes, build strong bond and learn to read/understand your dog.
3. work on obedience and bite (preferably without helper).
in stage teaching attack, no tug, sleeve or any equipment should be used.

p.s. PP and IPO absolutely different disciplines.

Jessejones

I asked about a harness the first time there...he said " eh...it doesnt matter. I bought a harness. We had the harness along....

I was mistaken in thinking they knew what they were doing.

Thank you for you input !
