This is the aftermath of one of those 'never gonna happen' encounters when an intruder followed the dog's owner up to the house. The owner was unaware of the idiot behind him, his dog took care of the situation when she was let out the door. The blood is all from the intruder, the dog was not injured. This is the same female on page five, doing the search for burried drugs.

Too many people that are experts in one genre and think they are experts in similar genre. Both ways...lol

btw, my definition of expert is someone with extensive knowledge and experience in something.......Wink Smile

What do you see in this vid?

First time bitework session and just prior to this was doing obedience on same field.  Only the second time at this location.    Tug foundation done by me, dog is 20 months old.    After this session I noticed the sleeve had blood on it when we got back to the truck, and one of the canines was broken off almost at gum line (it was weakened by something prior and was only 1/2 thickness).   Didn't seem to bother the dog during the session....

I honestly wouldn't work the dog like this. This is a very insecure dog that doesn't have the confidence. This is a dog that should be worked in prey.

He hackles and it looks like his front and back hackles are up... not a good thing to see. Even if that was his first session, I wouldn't expect that out of a 20 month old. Also, with a 20 month old dog, the location really shouldn't matter. I don't get why the dog is worked in defense rather than prey. Build up confidence first, put a foundation on him.

Insecure ? No confidence? Even if his hackles were up for a few seconds at the beginning, his body language is all confidence and enjoying himself...he is being worked in prey. Hackles, accompanied with that body language (tail rigid and obove his back, not wagging, ears erect, head up, going in for the bite when decoy plays rabbit running past) indicates excitement, IMO.

Nice job.

This dog hackles when playing with the elder female at home - I don't read too much into that display anymore. Why would you work a dog that is more defence than prey in prey to start? Wouldn't you start a dog in it's predominant drive then channel into the other drive if it's there?    This session was to see what balance dog has with a view towards defence being predominant than prey but still lots of prey to work with.

He showed straight up insecurity when he bit the tug. That was not a confident bite. He wanted to get away from the helper. I'm sorry guys, but it was straight up insecurity. You asked what we see, this is what I see. Read the dog. He was not confident and he was in straight up defense.

'Straight up insecurity', 'straight up defense'....so a dog must be insecure to be in defense?

I didn't see defense, only prey bites.

Remember what I said about assessing a dog by a short vid clip, baren? You look for a fault, and ignore all the strength demonstrated. Oh well.

Joanros dog has room to back up, but he doesn't.
He's watching the decoy, to me you can almost see it ticking over in his face, wtf is this guy doing he's sus, the dog to me seems to think about what's going on, he gets a little spooked by Joan picking up the suit but recovers instantly. The dog even let's the decoy come and pick up the suit, he's watching him coz the guy has been behaving oddly. I don't think any of that behaviour has to do with being cornered and tied.
It's a look someone pulled out of my dog on purpose while he was younger and crated, yet they were buddies 10mins before, and it was liked. A thinking dog.

In comparison Mithunas friends dog sounds like a shit to live, may as well have a nerve bag in the house if that's the way a dog behaves during a neutral, normal situation of allowed visitors in the house.

Guess you didn't see the dog dragging me towards the helper? This dog is not a predominantly prey dog like many "sporty" dogs, and he is serious when doing bite work. He has loads of prey drive and will channel defence-prey. He is also a slow-maturing dog who has had sporadic-at-best bite work sessions, as we cannot often drive 4.5 hrs one-way (plus border crossing) to work with a good helper. We will eventually get an IPO 1 on him but his primary job is not to do sport but to protect our property and myself from dangers (like when fishing in the bush), as we live in the sticks and have some large animals that can kill you. A "city" dog he is not, lol.
