Sorry I need to get more into facebook, not something I am good at  and thought you were looking at the picture here and he is bad enough.

My point in pushing this and asking questions is for all the people who read because they're just getting into dogs and want to get their dog trained. I am genuinely curious as to what he did or said that made you think he could train your dog and it would go well. The most basic Google search of his name brings up...NOTHING...except that he was just shot. Search his name plus dog training- nothing. Zero hits.

I am not a trainer who takes in other people's dogs, but if you search my name + German Shepherds or training, you'd at least see the results of a person who has been involved in dogs for a little while. This guy might as well work for Jimmy Johns, so I am really trying to understand whether he was a smooth talker in real life or you were just naive or you'd seen him train, so therefore didn't think it necessary to check him out online, etc. I think knowing what people are looking for and how they get taken is important in trying to minimize stories like this. The dog got very lucky in this case. It's usually not the case, sadly.

Yeah…I’d like to know more about the story as well, but this is the second time in about a month I’m reading about an issue between a trainer and owner where it’s clear that the owner of the dog did questionable research. Google is such a great tool and it’s clear most people don’t use it. It’s clear most people don’t ask others for references. I’m also close enough to the area where this situation occurred and I’ve never heard of this person.

Not sure if it’s the price point that draws people, but don’t you have some questions when the price someone gives you is a lot less than what others are charging. If the going rate is $5000+ and you’re getting quotes of $3500 or less you have to question either the quality of the work or why someone would give that large of a discount from the market rate. Just boarding a dog generally costs $30 a day, that’s easily $900 a month just for boarding a dog, and yet people are willing to train and title for less than that rate? Think about it…

Noobs don't even have to search around the net, all they need is to know that PDB exists and search around on this 'limited' forum - there's a ton of info available on here about what not to do, going rates, what to watch out for, 'trainers' who are scammers or generally bad news ... if they can figure PDB is here, enough to use it to complain, why not use it to do the homework ?

My mistake, period, I googled his name a week after he had my dogs... STUPID ME... He did some training here at my house 2 times and was very good with the dogs. I MADE AN ERROR IN JUDGMENT!! I attempted to get my dogs back on numerous occasions, with no results. I was afraid of him. The police were not of much help. But I was planning a trip there that week because he had advertised my girl for sale for $6800 as a personal protection dog. I said at that point that is it. Then his friend contacted me regarding the shooting.

Omg Smile Omg Smile  What a scumbag!  Bad enough breeding your dog without your permission, but...well, words fail me!

I am usually the first person to give someone the benefit of the doubt, or a second chance, but I can't help but think the man who shot this creep did you and the dog world in general a HUGE favour!

Sassy, I am glad you got all of your dogs back, although it´s sad a young guy had to die ( I am sure there are people who loved him despite of his personal faults ).
Guess, you learned your lesson, and maybe some more people will read this thread and learn, too.

by Sassyspurs on 20 December 2016 - 20:12

Thanks, I don't believe he died because of my dogs but he had an uncontrollable temper. I think he must have had other issues that possibly made him feel entitled.  Sad that someone died, but glad my story has an ending.

Very sad that a kid that young died. He was plenty young enough to turn his life around if he so desired. The guy who shot him had quite a few wounds- he hasn't even been charged with murder. Clearly, the guy was into some things he should not have been, but I would bet he has a mother who is grieving right now.

Sassy, I am not picking on you. More like making an example out of this situation.

I think a lot of novices don't realize just how SMALL the dog world is. They don't expect to be able to do a search and find that much. They don't realize how many people post questions about breeders and trainers prior to doing business with them. It's a small world- we may not like each other's dogs, we might not like each other, but those of us who are actually involved with dogs on any larger scale, in the same general vicinity all know "of" each other, if we don't know each other personally. If you look at a FB page, you'll have many common friends even if not friends with that person or don't even know they exist. Point being, the total lack of associations is a total giveway that the guy was completely full of b.s.

This is a problem even in people who are a bit more "known" (Cory Dewberry, anyone?!) but still- the info it out there, or lack of it, which is equally telling.

Or remember when I first joined pdb there was several people trying to seize a bitch from someone who has left her to die with a hugh mass on her mammary gland(s) whom had been in the wrongful owners hands for sometime and instead of just letting her go back to where she belonged kept her in frightful condition. That person was punished for her acts of animal cruelty plus jail time. Lots of dishonest people around, particularly in the dog world and the horse world, it's a money maker... don't care about the animals condition or future of the animal. Very sad indeed... Glad you got your bitch back. Some people are not that lucky. Nan
