Sorry I did not specify- not in the food, curry powder sprinkled on the poops....

I have a female that is especially clean and catlike. When she is an area where other dogs have done their business, you see her skipping and jumping to avoid any contact. A very clean dog from the get-go. We changed food when my puppy went to adult so that both dogs are on the same "high quality" dog food. Did not want to descriminate. Approximately 3 months later I was devastated to see her turn around and thake a huge gulp. At first I thought it was just a mistake and went into denial. Then I thought it was a behaviour thing. . . she was looking for attention with the young dog getting stronger and more dominant. The problem consisted and I became a poop watching hawk. I switched the food and as soon as I did it, the problem went away.

My pup too was on "high quality" food and was doing same then I noticed she was getting yeast troubles and switched her now she dos nto eat it anymore but then the was doing this when first came to me . I do feel it was the change in food not the aditional age though as the change was imediate. I now feed quality kibble, cottage cheese mixture, raw chicken wings and necks, some veggies

GSDNewbie, aren't you afraid of Salmonella, when you feed raw chicken parts? I agree on raw beef, veal, even pork, but chicken? Years ago, a famous Dobie breeder in Germany lost a whole newborn litter and the mother to an acute Salmonella poisening. The female had gotten into the trash and had found raw checken leftovers. The salmonella were transmitted to the nursing puppies. I am not into Dobies, my co-worker is, but I never forgot that story when my-co-worker told me. Just a warning! No raw poultra and no raw eggs! Sorry, I meant poultry.

by sunshine on 12 November 2004 - 19:11

Diane, The problem arose in our case when I put the female on BestBreed GSD Adult. My young dog however did not exhibit the same behaviour so I think my female was just not able to digest it or something was missing in her diet. Silbersee, I have heard of similar warnings about raw eggs and raw poultry. I don't feed my dogs any raw meat for the simple reason that I have read that feeding dogs raw meat can result in tape worms. I don't know if this true or not. It just happens that the tape worm is the only worm that is not affected by heart worm medicine. One of my dogs had tape worms once. . . after I gave her an uncooked marrow bone. My vet owns a piece of my yearly income. I should have married one!

I know what you mean, sunshine. My vet's elaborate clinic was partly financed with my fees. I agree on the tapeworms and raw meat, but it is mainly transmitted by fleas. Chris

she came to me on royal canin she did not like it had no appetite for it and she began piddling frequently and having discharge. Between the suspect yeast problem and her not liking the food I changed it. I have never before used this brand or since so I do not know if this is isolated or if many have this trouble. As for the chicken we raise our own organically grown chickens I do not like enhanced feeds, time period between butchering and buying the meat, the way the birds are kept in dark long filthy houseing while raised and the commercial preperation for sale. Take out all these factors and you have healthy meat she only gets the wings and necks when bird is butchered fresh it is cleansed when bird is butchered it is dunked into boiling water to take feathers off the meat is not fully cooked but the bones are far from cooked and brittle. I have been doing this for 15 years and I have never had a problem. I should have been more clear, I guess. In all the precautions taken as I would not feed ANY raw meat obtained from any other source than what I am doing. Our family stays as far from preservatives, growth hormones and other aditives as possible in all our food and nutritin. Now I have heard many many on here say they use chicken I dont know their source of meat but I can garuntee mine is fresh and disease free! I know many cannot do this and if I did not have the ability to I would NOT be feeding it either. I can however say ever since I have been feeding this I have noticed fantastic results in joint, teeth, skin., and hair in my dogs. I have NEVER had a HD problem. I am not saying the diet alone does this I also have rules about what my dogs do and dont do before their full growth is attained. I also use proper bedding and kenneling so they they are not on hard cold surfaces. Anyone can attest my GSD pup looks great~! shes glossy bright eyed and her ears are strong standing without any friendly waving. She also saticfies her teeth and gums naturally without what I feel is harmfull synthetic chews and animal byproducts like pig ears thast have carried somonella in past. When it takes so long to go from pasture to butcher to market to fridge/freezer than back out to dog there is a problem. Heck I use raw milk for family too!!! The food processes have began giving illnesses due to handeling and time and improper animal facilities rather than the animals themselves. Oh and um dont count your beef as being all that great to give raw either if you dont know how it was raised and butchered they are feeding the cows in feed lots the chicken house cleanings for protein!
